School Update at Principal’s Breakfast

Feb 10th, 2017

At this morning's Principal's Breakfast, I had another opportunity to share the progress of our school so far this year. As principal, spending time with parents to share the story of our school with the accomplishments of our teachers and students is one of my favorite things to do!

In my presentation, I updated parents on our MNSAA Strategic plan, school goals, staff trainings, and our IB implementation. In our 2nd year as an IB Candidate School, we are making steady progress towards IB authorization. The IB candidacy process happens over 3 years. This year, elementary teachers continue to apply the Transdisciplinary Themes of IB into their curriculum, completing additional units of inquiry.

We provide the teachers collaborative planning time to write and reflect on the units of inquiry. Taking time to reflect helps teachers adapt and change the unit to ensure we are providing the strongest learning experience for our students.

Implementing the IB also provides an opportunity to review all aspects of our school. In the past year, we have continued to have more discussions and reviews of teaching and learning across grade levels. We have begun to review and revise our assessments and report cards. As a staff, we have discussed and written a language policy. Students have helped create Essential Agreements throughout our school. The collaboration and connections across grade levels helps us provide a much stronger education for students from Kindergarten through 8th grade.

Our next steps will include: becoming more global and international minded, adding the action cycle, expanding 'language B' (Spanish) at Annunciation and other elements of the IB framework. This spring we will have a visit from an IB consultant who will provide feedback on our progress towards IB authorization.

The staff is working incredibly hard and we are proud of the progress we have made. What is most rewarding is seeing the changes and excitement in our students. In the end, that is what our work is all about.

Thank you for your continued support of our IB journey for the growth of students and teachers at Annunciation!
