Lenten Service Project

Mar 14th, 2019

Dear Parents,

My name is Kathleen Endert and I am a parishioner at Incarnation/Sacrado Corazon de Jesus. In the 1980's I taught third graders at Annunciation. I still carry wonderful memories of the children, parents, and colleagues! Those few years I think I learned more than the children did!

Permit me a few minutes of your time to explain the Lenten Project in which your children will be involved. I would like to begin with a quotation from Matthew's Gospel, Chapter 25:

"For I was hungry and you gave me food,
I was thirsty and you gave me drink.
I was a stranger and you made me welcome."

Annunciation House is a nonprofit organization ten blocks from the U. S./Mexico border in El Paso, Texas. Having been released by ICE, the families are provided hospitality by the volunteers at Annunciation House. Most of the families are fleeing poverty and violence from Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador. By the time they arrive at Annunciation House, the parents and children are very tired, hungry, and frightened after leaving their homes and enduring such a long and difficult journey.

Many caring volunteers help at the Annunciation House by providing nutritious meals, clean bedding, fresh change of clothing, medical aid, and any other needed assistance. Three of my friends, including Sister Margaret, a Sinsinawa Dominican, volunteered earlier this winter. They were overwhelmed by the courage, faith, and gratitude of the Latino families!

Their journey is not finished. With the help of a volunteer, each family needs to contact their sponsor, usually a relative, and organize travel plans. They will live with their sponsor, pending a court date before the immigration court judge.

During this Lenten Season, we are asking if you could help with items needed for our Latino families.... The children are in need of socks, underwear, backpacks, and toothbrushes-the size your child needs is fine! Please know that monetary donations are welcomed. Check can be made to SCJ.

Thank you for this opportunity to share the loving service of this "other" Annunciation House! Through Christ our Lord, Amen!
