  • 02/12/2016 Carnaval & Lent 2016

Principal Cassidy's News & Notes, Weekender

Our students, staff, and families had a wonderful day on Tuesday celebrating our Carnaval in preparation for the Lenten season. Hours of study, preparation, and planning went into this day. Everyone had a great time experiencing the many countries through the facts, games, food and decorations that the classes created. A big thanks to all who made this such a wonderful experience.

Starting with our Ash Wednesday mass, we now embark on the journey through Lent. It is a time for self-discovery as we remember how Jesus went into the desert for 40 days and was tempted. During our Lenten experience, we pray more, eat less, and give to the poor to prepare ourselves for the biggest event in our Christian faith – Christ’s Resurrection at Easter. But we must make ready our hearts and minds, like an athlete trains for a game or race. We need to strengthen our good habits as we remain God’s sons and daughters through the waters of Baptism.

As a school, we prepare for Easter by giving to our Mission Haiti banks, praying and reflecting daily, and participating in the Stations of the Cross. We pray as one community:

“Lord God, help us to be one with you during this season of Lent. Guide us as you led Jesus through the trying times in his life. May we let go of our negative habits and thoughts that make us feel distant from your loving presence. We look forward to the joy of Easter, for our hope is Jesus in this time of preparation. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.”

  • 02/05/2016 Staff Development Days

Principal Cassidy's News & Notes, Weekender

During Catholic Schools Week Annunciation teachers and staff worked with educational professional, Nancy Gerber on the IB focused topic: Inquiry Based Instruction.

Nancy Gerber is an instructional coach and curious lifelong learner. She has conducted trainings and evaluations across the nation. Over the years Nancy has held many roles from educational aide, teacher of primary and intermediate students, multi-age classroom teacher, charter school director, media specialist, as well as a participant on numerous committees. She is a fellow with the Science Museum of Minnesota, and a Certified Trainer for Lynn Erickson Concept Based Instruction network. Currently Nancy has the privilege of working with a variety of IB schools, and is working for the University of Minnesota as a mentor to teacher candidates.

In addition to Nancy's expertise in IB and inquiry, she is also renowned for her work in making thinking visible and developing cultures of thinking.

As we continue to shift our methods and learn more about the IB program, these staff development sessions are essential. I am very proud of the way that Annunciation teachers have become “risk-takers” and learners, too. It is so important that we continue to learn and grow so we can provide the best instruction and learning for all our students. I look forward to sharing more of our work with you in the coming weeks.

Thank you for accommodating these important sessions in the school year!

  • 09/11/2015 New School Year and a New Theme

Principal Cassidy's News & Notes, Weekender

    Theme for the year

The new school year is off to a busy and energetic start!  We begin with a new theme for the year – “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Our focus is on how we treat one another as we create our community together. Each morning, we begin in prayer, share the Gospel of the day, reflecting on the readings as we consider how we live this theme each day. Classes take turns leading us in our Hail Mary and our pledge of allegiance. Together, we begin by asking God to guide us in all we do.

As staff and parents, we want to model this for our children, too. We look for ways to consider others and treat them as we wish to be treated. What we do is a stronger lesson than what we say, so we work hard to live our theme each day as well.

    Weekender

Greetings everyone.  I am very excited for the school year.  I wanted to inform you of a change for our physical education class this year.

While many things will remain the same, there are changes that will affect your children.  This year, we will be changing the grading procedure for gym class.  Physical education grades will now be based on standards as well as participation.  In the past, physical education was based entirely on participation.  While participation is very important, we felt the need to include Annunciation's physical education standards in the grading process. The goal of physical education is to develop physically literate individuals who have the knowledge, skills and confidence to enjoy a lifetime of healthful physical activity.

Books included on the reading lists have been carefully read by master educators, with over 30 years' experience, specializing in reading education. The books are selected for their high interest level, challenging vocabulary, multiple reading levels and appropriate content. The books are purposefully selected to expose students to a variety of genres, quality authors, diverse cultures and historical eras.
