  • 12/13/2018 IB in Action: Language Learners

    School Events, Weekender

On December 12, our community combined our exploration and use of an additional language (Spanish) with honoring our Holy Mother on the most special feast of Our Lady of Guadelupe in our first all school mass in Spanish. “Our Lady of Guadalupe is a powerful symbol of Hispanic/Latinx identityand faith.  Her image is associated with everything from motherhood to feminism to social justice.”

Our gratitude to Sra. Lovera, Sr. Saluri, Sra. Paul, Sr. Haecherl, Fr. Park and Fr. Michael Daly and students for preparing and leading us in the mass.

All students in the International Baccalaureate® (IB) Programme have the opportunity to learn more than one language.  We believe that “Language is involved in all learning and is an essential vehicle for inquiry and the construction of meaning. It provides an intellectual framework to support conceptual development and critical thinking.”

  • 11/29/2018 Christmas Program 2018

School Events, Principal Cassidy's News & Notes, Weekender

This time of year is so special at Annunciation - Advent begins, we are getting close to the end of our first semester of school, and Christmas program rehearsals kick into high gear!

For decades, Annunciation Catholic School has held our Christmas program, sharing the story of the birth of Jesus with songs and highlights to last the whole Christmas season. Generations of families sing “Kermit’s Christmas” together while baking cookies or wrapping gifts. It is a shared moment that truly signifies the holy season is here.

Below is a note from our Creative Arts teacher and director, Miss Lorissa Letwin, who has kept the tradition going while adding her creativity to bring about our students “potentiality” in music and song. We hope you can join us for one or more performances. You can also order a DVD copy.

Mark your calendars for the Annunciation Christmas Program – 2018:
    •    Wednesday, December 19 – 9:00 am – Dress Rehearsal and Grandparents’ performance
    •    Thursday, December 20 – 9:00 am – Full performance for family and guests
    •    Thursday, December 20 – 6:30 pm – Full performance for family and guests (Please note new time, and this year the kindergarten class will be performing at the evening concert too!)

  • 11/15/2018 Principal Cassidy Weekly Update

School Events, Principal Cassidy's News & Notes, Weekender

This week, we celebrate our Thanksgiving prayer service as we bless the food we collected for Holy Rosary community. Our partnership with Holy Rosary started nearly 30 years with the Dominican Sisters. The menu and items needed has evolved over the years as the Holy Rosary community has changed. When Sister Martha began coordinating the needs of the community, it primarily consisted of Native American and Vietnamese families. Today the community is made up of mostly Hispanic families. Your generous donations allow us to provide around 20 complete food baskets each year. We are grateful for the generosity of our families to make the Thanksgiving holiday a wonderful time for many other families. We are blessed!

    Sensory Grant:
At the CSCOE Exceptional Learners conference this summer, Catholic schools gathered to learn the importance of having a place at the table for all learners. The conference reminded us that, “As Catholic Schools, we are called to build the Kingdom of God, which includes all His children, regardless of their abilities, challenges, or physical condition. We are required to look at children with the eyes of Christ, and to love and accept the beauty of their differences”.  CSCOE is helping our schools learn how to support all of our learners. They also provided a toolkit and on-going support.

In addition, through the efforts of a several parents, we were fortunate to receive a grant to help us make our school more “sensory-friendly”.

  • 11/15/2018 Holy Rosary Thanksgiving Food Collection

As an all school project at Annunciation, we have provided Holy Rosary Church with Thanksgiving food baskets for many years.  Each class will be assigned a donation of food and asked to bring in a contribution of money to help purchase the turkeys, pies, etc.  We encourage the students to give of themselves by earning their donations of money.  Checks can be made out to Annunciation School.  Please bring all food donations to school no later than Friday, November 16th.

Your students will bring home a requested food item. Holy Rosary has asked for extra rice and cooking oil if possible. Please feel free to add to the list or double up on items (ie – 3 boxes of cereal, more rice, more canned foods, etc.)  The need is very great.

Please join us for a Prayer Service on Friday, November 16th at 9:00am in the school auditorium.  We will gather together to bless this food and the families who will receive it.

  • 11/01/2018 Measuring MCA Proficiency

School Events, Principal Cassidy's News & Notes, Weekender

We are at the middle of our fall semester, which is the perfect time to come together at our school conferences next week. Being able to come together to discuss each child’s progress, learning to date, and opportunities to grow this year is a valuable experience. We are also blessed to have our whole community committed to collaborating for student success.

Part of the partnership is communicating our school’s progress as well. Each year, we reflect on our achievement as a school. As we work together to create a more seamless experience through our IB journey, review of practices and learning, we see that the cumulative experience for students across the grade levels is preparing them well.

Often, we are asked how our 8th grade graduates compare to other local school’s graduates. Over the years, we have found that our students always perform very well. Last year, 99% of our students met or exceeded the national norms on the NWEA MAP tests.  We review this data each year as another lens to see how we are achieving and if we are preparing our students well for high school and beyond.

Being a Catholic IB World School provides us the framework, process, and best practices to stay excellent. Part of this process is a continual cycle of reviewing reflecting, and refining so we can be assured our teaching and learning are focused on our vision and mission. This is central to the efforts of our staff and students every day.  It is a promise we have made to you and your family.  As our vision states: “Annunciation Catholic School fosters each child’s potential to create a better world through faith, virtue, knowledge, and service to others”.

    School Events, Weekender

Wednesday, October 24 was Unity Day. As a school, we started the week with a Unity buddy activity. Students made paper chains, posters, and more to promote kindness and unity. On Wednesday, we wore orange as a symbol of our unity.  This week, we highlighted many of the things we work on throughout the year.

To help us continue to build a safe and loving place for all, we are providing another resource. On the parent page of our website, you will be a form for parents, students or staff to report bullying activity. The report provides a definition of bullying and space to share more details. The report will be received by a staff member who will bring this forward for review and action as needed. We hope that most students, staff and parents feel comfortable approaching anyone on campus to share concerns. But should someone wish to use this format, we wanted to provide another way for information to be shared to ensure a safe, loving and positive place for all.

    School Events, Weekender

You may have heard or read a bit about Annunciation’s Sensory Friendly School initiative. Our commitment to educating the whole child has lead Annunciation to recognize that the needs of our student population are changing. As we welcome more and more students with unique learning needs such as sensory processing disorders, we recognize that the way we serve these students must change as well.

We have worked with parents to create a survey in order to gather information from the Annunciation community about perceptions of the current sensory environment and suggested improvements, and would greatly appreciate your feedback. A link to the survey can be found here:  https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/83BNYSZ.

Although Unity Day is celebrated for different reasons by different countries, there is a unifying theme that connects all of us. That theme is unity. This is true whether the unity ascribed is for young people recognizing the value of their peers, for ethnic groups to recognize the ties that bind us all together or for the people of a nation to work together as one group.  To show our unity, as an Annunciation community, students are encouraged to add orange to their uniforms on Wednesday, October 24th.

  • 09/27/2018 Parenting in the Digital Age: Helpful Resources

    School Events, Weekender

We are grateful to Erin Walsh, M.A. of Mind Positive Parenting for speaking at Annunciation about "Parenting in the Digital Age".

Last week, APO sponsored a speaker, Erin Walsh, who shared information on “Parenting in the Digital Age”. As digital natives, our children are growing up in a world where technology influences much of their lives. Yet, like with all things, we know that balance and good practice area the keys to making these resources positive influences on their lives. Erin did a fantastic job of framing the technology, reminding us of the great possibilities, and giving tools to making technology a great resource. She shared additional resources to help you, as parents, raise your children in this digital age. We hope you find them helpful and will continue to seek partners and educational opportunities for all of us to “raise” our children.

  • 09/27/2018 Peace Day: Students Take ACTION

    School Events, Weekender

In The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), voluntary, meaningful student action is expected to be seen as a result of student learning. Through action, students are able to grow socially and personally, developing skills such as cooperation, problem solving, conflict resolution and critical thinking.

On Monday, September 17, we learned about the International Day of Peace during our All School Morning Meeting. After hearing about Peace Day, 3rd graders Sienna and Joey took ACTION:

Sienna:  "After the Monday Meeting, I asked my teacher, Mrs. Crowley, if my class could have a peace party and celebrate peace.  Mrs. Crowley asked me to learn more about the Day of Peace and think of possible activities for the party. I went home thinking.  I thought and thought and then I talked about my ideas with my mom. She helped me think of even more ideas. I learned about Peace Day and shared what I learned with my classmates.  I asked my classmates to write cards about peace to Mrs. Urick’s class. We created cards and Mrs. Urick’s class made cards for us!"

Joey:  "After we made the cards, I had an idea to pair up with the kids in Mrs. Urick’s class to create peace posters for all the classrooms at Annunciation.  I thought the posters could be a reminder for all the kids in our school to spread and build peace."

    School Events, Weekender

We’ve invited Erin Walsh, M.A. of Mind Positive Parenting to speak at Annunciation on September 20th at 7pm, she will be offering guidance for parenting teens in the digital age.

Is there an app for that? Thriving in the digital world

Social networking, cell phones, and video games are game changers for kids and families.  Young people today spend an average of 53 hours a week with entertainment media, more than any other activity but sleeping. While media headlines suggest that media and technology are either good or bad for youth – evidence suggests that they are powerful. The good or bad depends upon how we use them. Digital technologies simultaneously unleash incredible opportunities for our kids and pose a new set of parenting challenges.

Erin Walsh, M.A. is a dynamic, knowledgeable speaker who has addressed a wide range of audiences on topics related to brain development and raising resilient young people in the digital age. Erin was instrumental to the development of the MediaWise movement and enjoyed working with her father, Dr. David Walsh, for 10 years at the National Institute on Media and the Family before creating Mind Positive Parenting together in 2010.

  • 05/25/2018 Celebrating the 8th Grade

School Events, Principal Cassidy's News & Notes, Weekender

Today, our 8th graders take their last final exam, had their last celebration and IB awards gathering, rehearsed for their graduation ceremonies and at 2:15 will take a final walk through the building to say goodbye to their school family. Whether a student has been here 9 years or 1 year, Annunciation is their home.  It seems strange that the final school day for them is already here.

Over this past year, we have worked together to fulfill our mission to develop each child to their full “potentiality”. We have celebrated together from Septemberfest to Graduation and every event in between.  We have prayed together through joyful moments – launching our Potentiality campaign, Christmas program, Carnaval, Exhibition, IB authorization visit, Monday morning meetings, and classroom celebrations – to sorrowful moments – loss of members of our community and tragedies within our country and world.  In all of this, it is the sense of faith and community that has held us together and formed the true family that Annunciation represents.

To our family, we send heartfelt thanks – for working with us, celebrating with us, and praying with us. As a family, we experience up’s and down’s, good times and bad times, but as a family does, we hold each other up and know that together, with God’s grace, there is nothing we cannot do.

As our “Potentiality” video says, “I am a promise, I am a possibility, I am a promise, with a capital P – I am a great big bundle of “Potentiality”.  As we wrap up the 2017-18 school year, we celebrate the partnership and effort of all of us to bring about the promise of each child and their full potentiality.

Thank you for partnering with us and being a member of our Annunciation family. We are grateful for this time together and look forward to next year when we continue the strong tradition of Annunciation Catholic School even as we build for the future.

    God Bless,
    Jennifer Cassidy

I am Mr. Schild and I’m excited to join the Annunciation Catholic School community. I was born and raised in Grand Rapids, Michigan, where I was a product of the Grand Rapids Catholic School system, graduating from St. Adalbert Grade School and West Catholic High School. I attended college at Central Michigan University where I received a Bachelor of Science in Education. I had a double major in Secondary Education Social Studies and Political Science and a minor in History. I was blessed in the fall of 2008 when I married my college sweetheart Natalie in Mount Pleasant, Michigan.

I have had the blessing of teaching in Catholic schools for the last 10 years. I am a Google Certified Educator and love incorporating technology into my social studies lessons. Currently, I’m a graduate student in the Murray Institute seeking a Masters of Arts in Educational Studies through the University of St. Thomas. I enjoy sharing my passion of history, civics, geography, and my faith with my students. I feel truly blessed to teach in a Catholic school where I can attend mass with my students and begin each class period with a prayer just as I experienced as a student in the Catholic schools of Grand Rapids, Michigan.

  • 05/25/2018 Welcome, Ms. Haecherl!

    School Events, Weekender

I am excited to join the Annunciation staff as the new 5th grade teacher!

As the oldest of three children I grew up used to being in a teaching role. I am from in a small town north of the cities where I was actively involved in my parish. When I was a 5th grader I started going to youth group and that is where my passion for the Catholic faith was nurtured.

I graduated from The University of Saint Mary's of Minnesota in Winona with a degree in Elementary Education and minor in Spanish. The next year I taught 2nd and 4th grade in Honduras. The abroad experience was something I loved but I missed my family often. For the past two years I have been teaching 5th grade in Willmar, Minnesota. I have enjoyed working with 5th graders and challenging them to be true thinkers and learners.

Teaching in a Catholic school is a new adventure for me but I am excited to bring both the love of faith and teaching together. I am thrilled to be teaching in an IB school.

Have a fantastic end of your year and I look forward to meeting everyone in the fall.

    Sincerely,
    Sara Haecherl

  • 05/25/2018 New Staff Announcements

School Events, Principal Cassidy's News & Notes, Weekender

    Hello Annunciation School Parents.

The last month or so has been busy with end of the year activities. In addition, I have been fortunate to lead the process of seeking new teachers to join our school community. For each opening, we have an initial interview with a team of people representing different aspects of the school program. We then have a second round with additional people joining me to have a more specific conversation to find the right person for each position.

We are very prayerful and intentional about finding people who share our vision and mission, who believe in what Annunciation stands for, and is excited about the future direction we are headed. This thorough process helps us find the very best people – along with a lot of prayer!

I am excited to introduce two recent hires. Our two new teachers will be joining us in 5th grade and Middle School Social Studies respectively. Attached are brief introductions and photos of our new teachers, Ms. Sara Haecherl and Mr. Rick Schild.

In addition, there is a letter from Shannon Buncher, our Preschool Site Director about a change for her and our preschool. Shannon lives near St. Jude of the Lake in Mahtomedi, which is her home parish. The pastor of St. Jude also had hired Shannon for a previous teaching position.  A position in the preschool opened at St. Jude and Shannon couldn’t pass up the opportunity to teach in her home parish. We are so grateful to Shannon for her amazing leadership and hard work for our preschool program. She has been a blessing. Fortunately, Miss Mary Eilen, our other Kinderstart teacher, will be taking the role of Site Director here at Annunciation. Blessings to you, Shannon! Thanks for all you have done to build our program.

While change can be hard, it is often through change that some of our greatest growth can occur. Our prayers continue that God sends us amazing people to join us in our mission. Thanks to all of you for your kind words and prayers as we seek new members of our team. We are blessed with the new staff joining us and look forward to more to come.

    Have a great Memorial Weekend!

  • 05/25/2018 2nd Grade Research

    School Events, Weekender

This week 2nd graders discussed how to take notes for a research project. First, they completed an idea map, filled with topics they wanted to find out about the plant. Next, they talked about how to use sources to pick out useful information. Students are hard at work collecting as many facts as they can to put together their final report.

  • 05/25/2018 The Limited Resource of Water

    School Events, International Baccalaureate, Weekender

Fourth grade students continued their study of how humans share the limited resource of water this week by restricting their use of water to only what they could carry with them for the school day. They filled one gallon jugs with water and were asked to only use the water from their jug for the entire school day. At the end of the day, students were challenged to find a use for their remaining water and not to waste it!

  • 05/25/2018 Field Day 2018

    School Events, Weekender

    Field Day is almost here!

This year, all activities will take place on the beautiful Annunciation Campus! Activities scheduled for the day are fun, fast-moving, and involve all! As in past years, all 7th grade students will have a lead role in coordinating activities during the event.

Following the All School Relay at approximately 12 noon, parents are invited to bring lunches to join their children for lunch outside.  The day wraps-up at 1pm and parents who are not able to join for lunch, are asked to pick students up as usual in the car pool line.

We look forward to a wonderful day of fun to conclude a great school year and kick off an awesome summer!

All students can be in free dress and must bring a bag lunch from home.
