09/27/2018 Unity Day: Wednesday, October 24, 2018
Although Unity Day is celebrated for different reasons by different countries, there is a unifying theme that connects all of us. That theme is unity. This is true whether the unity ascribed is for young people recognizing the value of their peers, for ethnic groups to recognize the ties that bind us all together or for the people of a nation to work together as one group. To show our unity, as an Annunciation community, students are encouraged to add orange to their uniforms on Wednesday, October 24th.
We are grateful to Erin Walsh, M.A. of Mind Positive Parenting for speaking at Annunciation about "Parenting in the Digital Age".
Last week, APO sponsored a speaker, Erin Walsh, who shared information on “Parenting in the Digital Age”. As digital natives, our children are growing up in a world where technology influences much of their lives. Yet, like with all things, we know that balance and good practice area the keys to making these resources positive influences on their lives. Erin did a fantastic job of framing the technology, reminding us of the great possibilities, and giving tools to making technology a great resource. She shared additional resources to help you, as parents, raise your children in this digital age. We hope you find them helpful and will continue to seek partners and educational opportunities for all of us to “raise” our children.
09/27/2018 Hispanic Heritage Month
This week we highlighted Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month at our Monday morning meeting. Hispanic and Latino Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the cultures and contributions of Americans whose families and ancestors come from Mexico, Spain, Central and South America, and the Caribbean.
At our Monday morning meeting, we highlighted the diversity and uniqueness of the Spanish-speaking members in our Annunciation community. Some of our Spanish-speaking students shared a little bit about their heritage, and what makes their family unique. We would also like to continue to highlight the Spanish-speaking members of our Annunciation community this month.
09/27/2018 Peace Day: Students Take ACTION
In The International Baccalaureate Primary Years Programme (PYP), voluntary, meaningful student action is expected to be seen as a result of student learning. Through action, students are able to grow socially and personally, developing skills such as cooperation, problem solving, conflict resolution and critical thinking.
On Monday, September 17, we learned about the International Day of Peace during our All School Morning Meeting. After hearing about Peace Day, 3rd graders Sienna and Joey took ACTION:
Sienna: "After the Monday Meeting, I asked my teacher, Mrs. Crowley, if my class could have a peace party and celebrate peace. Mrs. Crowley asked me to learn more about the Day of Peace and think of possible activities for the party. I went home thinking. I thought and thought and then I talked about my ideas with my mom. She helped me think of even more ideas. I learned about Peace Day and shared what I learned with my classmates. I asked my classmates to write cards about peace to Mrs. Urick’s class. We created cards and Mrs. Urick’s class made cards for us!"
Joey: "After we made the cards, I had an idea to pair up with the kids in Mrs. Urick’s class to create peace posters for all the classrooms at Annunciation. I thought the posters could be a reminder for all the kids in our school to spread and build peace."

09/27/2018 Illness Policies & Procedures
Now that school is back in session, we wanted to remind families about our illness policies and procedures. Please see the attached guide about when your child is well enough to go to school. Flu season is coming, and our school nurse recommends everyone get their flu shot to help reduce the spread of illness.
If your child is sick or absent for any reason, you must contact the school office to report the absence. Please call 612-823-4394 or email@example.com. You can also contact your child’s teacher, but it is imperative that you let the office know of any absence as we track all illnesses and absences for state reporting purposes.
We hope to keep all of our students and staff healthy at Annunciation!
09/27/2018 Health Office Is Looking For Volunteers
Can you put on a band aid? Can you take a child’s temperature in their ear? Can you make an ice pack with ice cubes and baggies? If you answered “yes” you’re qualified to help out in the Annunciation Health Office. We need one parent in the Health Office from 11am to 1pm each day. Any health related background is certainly a bonus, but not a requirement.
Join us if you can Thursday 10/4 from 8:15 - 8:45am in the Spirit Center conference room for coffee and a brief overview of the health office. You don't need to have medical training, just be able to take a temperature, hand out ice packs and give TLC!

We’ve invited Erin Walsh, M.A. of Mind Positive Parenting to speak at Annunciation on September 20th at 7pm, she will be offering guidance for parenting teens in the digital age.
Is there an app for that? Thriving in the digital world
Social networking, cell phones, and video games are game changers for kids and families. Young people today spend an average of 53 hours a week with entertainment media, more than any other activity but sleeping. While media headlines suggest that media and technology are either good or bad for youth – evidence suggests that they are powerful. The good or bad depends upon how we use them. Digital technologies simultaneously unleash incredible opportunities for our kids and pose a new set of parenting challenges.
Erin Walsh, M.A. is a dynamic, knowledgeable speaker who has addressed a wide range of audiences on topics related to brain development and raising resilient young people in the digital age. Erin was instrumental to the development of the MediaWise movement and enjoyed working with her father, Dr. David Walsh, for 10 years at the National Institute on Media and the Family before creating Mind Positive Parenting together in 2010.
09/13/2018 NWEA MAP Testing
Starting September 17, students will begin taking the fall NWEA MAP assessments in grades 2-8.
The MAP test provides data in reading and math that shows student growth over time connected to the standards they are learning at each grade level. Because it is an adaptive test, not a standardized test, it shows how much students know even beyond grade levels. The goals for each student is not just to reach a standard benchmark, but to show growth in their learning.
Dear Fifth Grade Family,
We are excited to announce the kick-off of the 2018, 5th Grade International Baccalaureate Exhibition. We would like to invite you to a special introduction for parents and 5th-grade students on Friday, September 28 at 8:00 am in the 5th grade space. Due to the in-depth nature of this venture, your attendance is highly recommended.
