02/13/2014 How do you spell fantastic?
Congratulations to our own local super speller, 7th grader, Sadie R.
Sadie qualified for the 2014 Minnesota Seven County Metro Area Regional Spelling Bee. There are only 45 school champions from the entire metro area who qualified based on results from a challenging online exam.
Sadie scored a perfect score on the spelling portion of the exam by correctly spelling words including: azure, blitzkrieg, carnivore, gynarchy, maladroit, and oratorio. Examples of vocabulary words that Sadie was able to define correctly included: aggregate, barrio, meticulous, pacifism and hedonism.
The 2014 Minnesota Seven County Metro Area Regional Spelling Bee will be held on Saturday, March 15 at Augsburg College. The champion of this Bee and one parent will win an expenses-paid trip to Washington, D.C., to compete in the 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee.
02/13/2014 What’s New in the Library?
Maud Hart Lovelace Reading
You may have heard the buzz about the Maud Hart Lovelace Awards. They are children's choice book awards created to encourage reading in children grades 3-8. Visit the Maud Hart Lovelace Awards web site for more details. Annunciation students will begin to participate in the program after Spring Break (first week of April). Students and a parents will sign a contract stating which of the books they’ve read. Then, students will vote for their favorite book and send the results into the official committee. We’ll have our celebration towards the end of the school year.
Scholastic Book Fair
Please save the date for this year's Scholastic Book Fair: Sunday March 16th-Friday March 21st.
5th-8th grade students who would like to make a poster for the book fair can do so and recieve $2.00 in Scholastic dollars. The theme this year is Fiesta. Please have the posters back to me no later than Friday March 7th.
Our Wednesday morning Scripture group has just completed its study of the Book of Exodus and we’re ready to move on to something new. So on February 19th we will begin our adventure of reading the Book of Job. We meet from 9:15 to 10:30 every Wednesday morning in the Hospitality Room. Thanks to Louise Fowler who serves as our facilitator, we not only study the Scripture, but we also spend some time in prayer together and enjoy one another’s company. Our gatherings have become quite dear to us and we would love to have you join us!
02/05/2014 Living Our Theme
“So encourage each other and build each other up.” 1 Thessalonians 5:11
We continue to live our theme this year and encourage each other in many ways:
Supporting each other in the classroom and learning
Noting people’s skills and unique talents
Reminding each other that we are special in God’s eyes
Cheering each other on in competition and hard work
Teaching and modeling for others
Saying “hello” and valuing each person
Welcoming all who come to our school
Holding each other to high standards
As part of our caring and vibrant community, this theme is central to our success. This week, the teachers attended a workshop on creating a positive school climate. We were reminded of ways we can work together and support each other, as well as our students, holding each other to high standards to create the best school environment.
The teachers will be carrying this into the classroom to help students in their actions to support each other and create this positive learning environment. You can also help by reminding them of the importance of their “job” at school – to listen, to learn, to be respectful, and to work hard. When we all work together, great things happen!
We are excited to continue this work with our students to live our mission of nurturing each child’s spirit to achieve their full potential. Thank you for all the help you give us in making our mission come alive at Annunciation School.
