2015-16 School Wrap Up

Dear Annunciation School Parents,

Happy summer!  School is humming with events this summer: the rummage sale, Vacation Bible School, end of the year wrap up work, auditorium and gym floor renovations, playground installation, and more. At the same time, we are planning for next school year. We wanted to share some final information with you and updates for the year ahead.

As we review our student achievement, we are very proud of the accomplishments. This year, 96% of our 8th grade students exceeded the national average on MAP tests in both reading and math. Those are incredible statistics! We are sending our students to high school extremely well prepared. Beyond their academic achievements, our students excel in service, character and faith – truly living our mission to address the needs of the whole child.

In our strategic planning, our goal is to find ways to continue to improve our school. This spring, we sent a parent survey to help identify areas of strength and areas for growth. At the same time, our staff spent the month of April in working groups, reflecting on ways to improve. From this survey and staff input, we have some changes for the coming school year to share:

  • Based on parent feedback and staff input, we will be expanding our school day next year. School hours will be from 8:00 – 2:45. This additional time will allow us to expand lunch/recess and also provide more instructional time in the school day.
  • With the extended school day, we are able to adjust our school calendar. Next year, we will end our school year on Thursday, June 1. This earlier dismissal will fit better with family and school needs, but will not reduce instructional time because of the additional time added to each school day.

This summer, our teachers continue to work and learn.  Staff will be meeting to write additional IB units of inquiry, learn more about the writing curriculum, prepare for the new math program, learn how to integrate technology and STEM into lessons, discuss strategies to support struggling learners, and more. We will be learning how to use the MAP data to set instructional goals and improve teaching and learning in reading and math. Lots of work and learning continues for us this summer!

Over the next months, we will continue to provide updates for you. Look for email updates, final year end reports, summer packet and a letter in early August for beginning of the school year information. As always, contact us with any questions.

Thank you again for the support you give Annunciation School. We are blessed and honored to teach your children and continue to work to be the best school for your family.
